Seven years after the Columbus Jets left town, the Columbus Clippers began play in the International League in 1977. For the club's first two seasons, they were an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 1979, they became a farm club of the New York Yankees and remained so for over a quarter century. After the 2006 season, the club became a Washington Nationals affiliate.

The Clippers are scheduled to move into a new ballpark named Huntington Park in 2009.
