Frank Colston played four years in the minor leagues. He started off with the unaffiliated 1986 Salt Lake City Trappers, hitting .311/~.370/.432 as their starting catcher and just missing the Pioneer League top 10 in average. Back with the Trappers in 1987, Colston hit .397/~.470/.503 to finish second in the league in average. He made the PL All-Star team ahead of two top prospects, Eddie Taubensee and Dave Nilsson, and was part of a team that won 29 games in a row, a new Organized Baseball record. Colston also played 43 games for another independent club, the Miami Miracle, hitting .230/~.312/.257 only.

In 1988, Frank was signed by the Seattle Mariners and assigned to the Wausau Timbers but he batted just .209/.287/.288 in 67 outings. Coltson also pitched five games, with a 3.38 ERA and no decisions. In 1989, he returned briefly to Miami to conclude his career.
