The Chicago White Sox signed Herb Adams as an amateur free agent in 1947. He spent his rookie season with the class D Madisonville Miners. Herb appeared in 54 games with 210 at bats, collected 85 base hits and had a .405 batting average.
Adams, a left hand hitting outfielder, hit .261 in 95 games for the Chicago White Sox from 1948 to 1950 including a .293 average in 56 games in 1949.
After serving in the Army during the Korean War he continued his career in the minor leagues until his playing days ended after he suffered a broken leg in 1959. Herb spent several years in the minors, appearing in 1,078 games with 4,199 at bats, had 1,311 base hits for an excellent .313 batting average.
Adams also did some pitching in his first year up with Madisonville and won 4 while losing 4, winding up with a 3.86 ERA.
Herb was not the only one of his family to show talent. He was the son of an actress who had bit parts in silent films and Adams was born in Hollywood, California in 1928. His aunt , actress Anne Shirley, was featured in films during the 1930's and 1940's and earned an Academy Award nomination for her role in Stella Dallas.
Adams resides in Wheaton, Illinois where he was employed by the post office for 30 years.
