Part of one of the great baseball families of all-time, Jesus Alou had the unique distinction of being teammates of his brothers Matty Alou and Felipe Alou with the San Francisco Giants in 1963. He is also the uncle of major league outfielder Moises Alou and minor leaguers Jose Alou and Felipe Alou Jr.. Alou was a Houston Astros coach in 1979.
Jesus, Felipe, and Matty each played at least 15 seasons in the majors, and Moises is (as of 2007) in his 16th season.
Jesus, who had at least 400 at-bats each year in the majors from 1965-71, became a role player for the last six years of his major league career, getting at most 220 at-bats in a season.
He appeared in 655 games in right field, 445 games in left field, and only 5 in center. He was also in more than 300 games as a pinch-hitter or pinch-runner.
As a base-stealer, he should have stayed home, stealing 31 times but getting caught 46 times. In 1967 he was successful only once in eight tries, and in 1968 he succeeded only once in five tries.
